As a doberwoman, I am predisposed to hypothyroidism (low thyroid hormones).  And believe me, I have already been tested for it!  It is a disease that affects dogs most commonly.  Signs of hypothyroidism include dry hair, hair loss, skin disease, lethargy and weight gain.  The diagnosis is made with a simple blood test.  The treatment is a daily medication.  It does require some monitoring (bloodwork) to ensure that your pet is receiving the right dose of medication, as too much thyroid supplement may cause hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid).  It is a very treatable disease but I am glad that I don’t have it!  While in this picture it may look like Watson and I are lethargic, we are just sun bathing!  If you think your dog might have hypothyroidism, the best thing to do is consult your veterinarian!
