As a mature doberwoman I don’t enjoy chewing on things as much as I did when I was a puppy. Now, don’t get me wrong I enjoy a good bone every now and again. But what type of bone or chew toy I get is really important. I know that I don’t get to eat anything very hard like antlers or actual bones. Even though these have become very popular, they are very good at breaking dog’s teeth. Every once in a great while I will get a rawhide. I am always supervised and it’s taken away from me if my gums start to bleed. I am lucky because rawhides don’t give me an upset stomach like they do to some dogs, if that’s the case for you, I’d stay away from rawhides. Other treats like greenies or milkbone dental chews are also vet approved! It’s important to make sure that the treats are wider than the dog’s muzzle (snout) so they can’t choke on them and have a just a little bend in them so they don’t break our teeth. And it’s always a good idea to make sure that treats and toys are given when supervised so that if they start to break apart, they can be taken away (as upsetting as it may be I know my owner is just trying to keep me safe.) Take Watson for example here with his hot dog, he was pretty upset when he had removed part of the rope, as the toy was then removed from him. There are plenty of safe chew toys and treats out there for us so don’t go chewing on shoes, tables or toilet paper!!
